Loss & Rebirth: A Community Poem and Workshop
May 1 @ 1:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
On Saturday, May 1, 2021, Philly poets Carlos Jose Perez Samano and Marshall James Kavanaugh will be leading a community-created poem and workshop on the themes of Loss and Rebirth, as part of the much larger May Day festivities going on to celebrate the Aztec holiday, Toxcatl, in the Cesar Andreu Iglesias Community Garden.
Please RSVP to let us know that you are coming and to receive an email reminder that the event is happening. This is an in-person event! Wear a mask and join us. When you arrive at the garden look for the pink table and two typewriters!
To complete this community poem, participants will be presented with two typewriters and a paper scroll to add their words and stories to.
- On one typewriter, they will be instructed to type out a poem or a few lines on the themes of victory, success, rebirth, overcoming, and survival.
- On the second typewriter, they will be instructed to type on the themes of letting go, moving forward, death, sickness, loss and pain.
The resultant text will be a collaborative poem that reflects what our community has experienced through out the last year of the pandemic and recent social unrest, while also giving space for community members to plant poetic seeds for the new year to come. Given the time and enough volunteers, a selection of the text will be performed at 7pm, on the main stage at the garden. Selections from the text will also later be published in a zine that can be picked up at the weekly food distribution. These selections will also be incorporated in a future mural painted at the garden.
We’re excited to write with you on May 1st!
