Intro to Fiction with Jared Yates Sexton

This 4-week course will serve as an introduction to the building blocks of short fiction, including the concepts of Fiction as a Dream, Building Compelling Characters, Crafting Engaging Plot, and using stories as a vehicle to communicate personal experience and philosophy. Lectures examining published works will provide framework and prompts will give students an opportunity to begin crafting their own stories.

In addition to his widely-acclaimed political writing, Jared has published three short story collections and one novel, and is a Professor of Creative Writing at Georgia Southern University.

Event Dates & Times

  • Wednesdays, 7:00 – 8:30 EST.
  • 19th & 26th May, 2nd & 9th June. (Sessions will be recorded for anyone who cannot attend.)
  • Optional 30 minute add-on following class for one-on-one draft consultation ($25).

COST: $100/$125 with optional 30-minute draft consultation available after the workshop.

ABOUT THE HOST:

Jared Yates Sexton’s work has appeared in The New York Times, Politico, Newsweek, The New Republic, and elsewhere. He is the author of AMERICAN RULE: HOW A NATION CONQUERED THE WORLD BUT FAILED ITS PEOPLE from Dutton/Penguin-Random House, THE MAN THEY WANTED ME TO BE: TOXIC MASCULINITY AND A CRISIS OF OUR OWN MAKING, and five other books. He is an associate professor of creative writing at Georgia Southern University.
