Writing Wellness: A Healing Verse Philly Poetry Writing Workshop with Trapeta Mayson
October 8 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm$250
October 8, 15, 22 & 29 from 6-8 pm.
Writing and reading poetry engages our senses along with our emotions. Poetry, through its expression of feelings and words have highly therapeutic effects on the mind. Disclosing challenging emotions and expressing core feelings in writing can lead to improvements in a wide range of health outcomes, including mental health. The act of capturing one’s words on a page can be liberating. The practice of reading poetry and developing a “go-to” toolkit of healing verses to guide us through turbulent times is essential. As part of her Healing Verse Philly project, an initiative that weaves poetry into urgent conversations about mental health and wellness through a series of activities that aims to educate the public, de-stigmatize mental illness, and provide real-time affirmation, City of Philadelphia Poet Laureate, Trapeta B. Mayson offers Writing Wellness, a 4-session guided and generative poetry writing and reading workshop that centers poems as a useful intervention for coping through difficult times to potentially find healing and release. Open to all levels of writers and practitioners, participants will be prompted to explore their own experiences and create free verse, confessional, praise, healing verses and elegiac poems, among others, as well as learn how to use their experiences and the workshop’s techniques as a springboard for those who are aiming to apply them in community or family settings. Participants will also read/hear the works of poets whose works highlight themes of trauma, injustices, personal and familial struggles that impact mental health and wellness, as well as engenders survival, healing and celebration. By the close of the workshop, participants will create a Healing Verse Writing Wellness Toolkit filled with poetic remedies or small bursts of joy such as verses, prompts and affirmations to help ease in trying times.
