Wednesdays On the Stoop, a series of free programming by Zoom every Wednesday from 4 pm – 5 pm. The sessions are designed to be a constant structure–every Wednesday at 4 you can count on Blue Stoop to plug you into your writing energy with an informal and supportive space.
Benshi Poems with Ted Rees
Benshi is a traditionally Japanese art form that involves live narration of silent films, a practice that has diminished significantly with the advent of modern cinema. However, the form has found its practitioners in the west, with many poets utilizing benshi as a way of writing and performing poetry through multiple media forms simultaneously. In this session, poet Ted Rees will lead the group in a discussion of benshi techniques and practitioners, and then we will all write our own “benshi poems” to a short, silent film, after which there will be an opportunity to share with the group.
Ted Rees is the author of Thanksgiving: a Poem (Golias Books 2020) and In Brazen Fontanelle Aflame (Timeless, Infinite Light 2018), and his third book is arriving in sping 2022. He conducts poetry workshops through his Overflowing Poetry Workshops programming, and co-edits Asterion Projects with Levi Bentley.
