FOR THE YOUTH: Selflessness
January 5 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The W.E.B. Du Bois and Baldwin Reading Collective is having a public reading and meeting series focused on the youth, their cultivation and development within the framework of the Black Radical Tradition.
These public meetings will be centered on our problems — whether that be depression, confusion, feelings of lostness and aloneness, questions of education and the future. We wish to, and feel that we will, achieve a sense of clarity in the reality of our historical moment — being able to see our times for what they are; seeing our home, the West for what it is in 2020 rather than what it professes to be. We want to deal with the youth because we carry the future in us. We have become so morally destroyed by our times that we cannot even see our own beauty, which is the beauty of the future. To gain our self respect, as Malcolm X so valiantly fought for, to gain our courage and our spirit of struggle, we must give our lives to something greater than ourselves — the revolutionary tradition of America, which is the Black Radical Tradition.
The questions arise: Who am I, where am I living? Am I responsible for where I live, must I take care of it? How can we earn our lives? What do our lives mean? Can taking responsibility for our lives and the lives of others and the life of this country give our lives meaning? Can we risk ourselves to make ourselves greater, to make reality, this country, a more humane place to live? How can we develop a new sense of who we are from where we have been; how can we develop a new sense of our country from where the country has been?
We will read and watch the writings of figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois, James Baldwin, Martin Luther King Jr., Huey P. Newton, Paul Robeson, etc. and look at the history of this country in order to seek answers to the questions that we haven’t learned how to ask yet; and in turn, we will be able to ask the questions that will lead to a new way to live our lives. We look forward to getting to know you more and learning with you.
We will be meeting twice a month, on the first and third Tuesdays. These meetings will be coming at you on FB live.
